IOpening

Music was present long before it became a discipline. In 2017 the beats came first; the beats brought other artists into the room, and the room became a practice.

He spent that period recording other people — learning arrangement, signal chain and vocal direction from the operator's side of the desk. By late 2018 he was recording songs of his own. Not a change of career, a widening of one: the producer stayed, the engineer stayed, and a writer and performer were added to the same set of hands.

Jaywakeup is a Switzerland-based alternative rap artist and producer working between soulful, melodic material and modern, occasionally experimental rap production. He produces most of his own work, and the production carries as much of the writing as the lyrics do.

Records tend to start as atmosphere: a texture, a chord movement, a drum pattern that suggests a tempo of speech. Vocals arrive inside that environment rather than on top of it.

Working simultaneously as artist, producer, engineer and songwriter lets him influence a record from its earliest sonic idea through to the final take — including the decisions in between that usually pass through other hands. That autonomy is the point.

Production and performance are not separate disciplines here. Instrumentation, arrangement, recording and vocal direction stay inside one process.

The individuality comes from the sequence of decisions: which sample stays raw, where the low end is allowed to break, how much room is left around a vocal, when a melodic idea is left unresolved.

Those choices happen in the same session, by the same person — which is why the atmosphere of a Jaywakeup record is inseparable from what is said on it.
